History

The earliest clue to the existence of the Plains Methodist Church is found in Elmer T Clark’s book Methodism in Western North Carolina (pg. 78). “At Clyde in Haywood County there were former Methodist Episcopal Church, probably formed by Samuel Edney in 1798 and called Camp Ground, later Louisa Chapel, then Arnon Plains and eventually Plains Methodist Church. Plains was a part of the then Holston General Conference of the United Methodist Church.

History indicates that Arnon Plains existed pre-civil war, but due to the devastation of the war, it is difficult to pinpoint the exact date.

The first recorded land transaction for the church was on January 24, 1842 when Enoch Hall donated six (6) acres of land for the purpose of building the church, which was a log cabin.

In 1875, part of the congregation moved to a settlement on the Pigeon River, which later became Central Methodist.

A part of the congregation (Northern faction) from Arnon Plains built another church near the original church site, while another group (Southern faction) moved further up the creek and created another church called Harmony Grove Methodist.

On October 5, 1941, the congregations from Arnon Plains and Harmony united, and in 1968 merged with the former Evangelical United Brethren Church.

A Ground Breaking ceremony on September 25, 1948 for the current church which was completed in the spring of 1951. A dedication service for the present church was conducted May 20, 1962.
